FROZEN CHICKEN / CUTS

THE HISTORY OF BRAZILIAN POULTRY

It is added that the bird arrived in Brazil in 1503, with Gonçalo Coelho, who docked in Rio de Janeiro. But commercial production appeared in Minas Gerais, around 1860, when the State began to dispatch chickens and dairy products to other regions of the country.

The creation of the chicken, however, was rural. The birds (Creoles or free-range chickens) lived free and took six months to reach the slaughter weight, in the range of 2.5 kilos or more.

The process of modernization and scale production of poultry in the country began in the 1930s, due to the need to supply markets that were already gigantic at the time.

Since the 1950s, Brazilian poultry has gained momentum with advances in genetics, with the development of vaccines, nutrition and specific equipment for its creation. The large Brazilian poultry agro-industries gained structure in the early 1960s. T

oday, broilers are slaughtered at around 40 days of age and average weight of 2.4 kilos. The metamorphosis of Brazilian commercial poultry, with genetic improvement, introduction of an integrated production system, balanced nutrition, proper management, sanitary control and quality of meat and eggs is one of the greatest achievements of national agribusiness and, by the way, should not stop there.

Brazil is now the second largest producer and exporter of chicken meat. In 2002, it produced 7.6 million tons and exported 1.3 million. Per capita domestic consumption of chicken reached 34 kilos last year. Egg production, on the other hand, exceeded 21 billion units and per capita consumption reached 125 units.
